Whether you are heading down to Nikko for a day trip or week long exploration - Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Waterfall make great stops! If you enjoy being surrounded by fellow travellers but still love hearing your own thoughts and that tinge of serene away from havoc and cameras in your peripheral then these are the stops for you!
THE LOCATION - Lake Chuzenji
Lake Chuzenji is a fabulous scenic lake in the mountains above Nikko, just off the foot of Mount Nantai. Mount Nantai is said to be Nikko's sacred volcano, which when erupted blocked the valley below creating Lake Chuzenji about 20, 000 years ago. Leaving us with this peaceful scene that is great in any season!
Lake Chuzenji can be access by catching the bus to Chuzenjiko Onsen, which is connected with central Nikko by Tobu bus. The buses leave from JR and Tobu Nikko Station and are bound for Chuzenjiko Onsen or Yumoto Onsen. There are about three buses per hour. The one way trip from Tobu Nikko Station to Chuzenjiko Onsen takes about 50 minutes and costs 1150 yen. A 2-day pass for unlimited bus rides between Nikko and Chuzenjiko Onsen is available for 2000 yen at Tobu Nikko Station.
The Location - Kegon Falls
Kegon Waterfall is one of the most famous waterfall in Nikko, standing at almost 100 meter tall this beauty was stunning in winter !
If you don't mind a short walk from Lake Chuzenji to Kegon Waterfall, it's definitely worth it and trust me, I did it during the winter in a dress! If you want to start your trip from the waterfall and make your way down to the lake, you can opt to travel via bus. Kegon Waterfall is a short walk from the Chuzenjiko Onsen bus terminal and like I've mentioned before, you can access this site with a bus pass from JR or Tobu Nikko station.
I hope you enjoyed this little this snippet of Lake Chuzenji and Kegon Waterfall !
